SH Pratt Group Ltd
SH Pratt Group is an established, independent family run business, with a reputation of excellence. Their journey began in 1947, developing an Import, Ripening and Fruit Distribution Company; previously known as SH Pratt & Co Bananas. Realising the scope and potential of each part of the business, the company diversified into separate standalone divisions, under the SH Pratt Group umbrella, enabling them to service a range of sectors within the food produce and distribution industry.
Bárbara Serra – Head of Technical Compliance
Bárbara is an outstanding Food Safety Professional, shortlisted for BRCGS Professional of the Year 2022 and received BRCGS Certificated Site of the Year on behalf of SH Pratt Group at BRCGS Food Safety Europe 2022.
What was the business reason for BRCGS certification?
Initially it was a requirement of our customers, but as the company has grown we see the benefits of been certified to BRCGS are a lot more than just complying with a customer requirement.
We have improved the ways we work, gained the trust of our customers and suppliers, and we have achieved a level of compliance and legality that is present every day, in everything we do.
Key learnings or challenges?
Certification is a continuous journey and you always want to do more and improve. A major challenge to this is the change of culture and perception of all departments in the business and having a multicultural, multi-language workforce brings its own challenges. The way to overcome these challenges is to investigate the needs of the employees and adapt as much as we can. For example by using more images/photos than words so the message is easily communicated.
How do you demonstrate food safety culture?
Food Safety Culture is demonstrated in different ways, through internal and external audits, employees’ meetings and senior management meetings, as well as surveys.
