March 8 is International Women’s Day – a global day of recognition to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
This year’s theme is #ChooseToChallenge, which is a call for collective action and shared responsibility in driving a gender-balanced world.
Kim Jenkins is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for SAI Global, overseeing the operational performance and growth of the Assurance and Standards business units.
An experienced leader in business transformation for multinational corporations across information, content, services, and retail banking, Kim began her professional career via what she calls a somewhat circuitous route.
“I started out my professional life as a Marine Biologist, studying plankton systems in the sub-Antarctic as part of a global science initiative understanding the role of the oceans in, and response to, global warming and increases in atmospheric carbon,” she explains. “I spent several months at a time on ships in the sub-Antarctic, which was an incredible experience.”
Kim went on to become a wildlife conservationist for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), applying her training to help preserve the habitats of plants and animals in Southern Africa. While at WWF, Kim’s skillset and business acumen caught the attention of a WWF board member who encouraged her to pursue an MBA. Earning her MBA led Kim to the retail banking industry, and eventually over to India, with FirstRand Bank to head up the establishment of a foreign bank branch in India.
“Following that, I was offered a role with Experian which allowed me to gain broader business experience in a global business,” she shares. “I ran the South African operation, then Central Europe (based out of Germany) and finally, was moved over to lead the Australia & New Zealand operation. When that assignment came to an end, I chose to stay in Australia rather than move on to a new assignment, and the rest is history!”
